Embryo loss represents about 10-15% of conceptions with clinical evidence of pregnancy and about 65% of all gestations. Many factors can cause embryo loss, but it is well recognized that 50- 70% of early spontaneous abortions result from chromosomal abnormalities. In particular, up to 96% of them are numerical chromosome abnormalities. Although trisomies for all the chromosomes have been reported in spontaneous miscarriages, the most frequently reported in literature are those involving chromosomes 15, 16 and 22 and are supposed to be the major cause of early abortions affected by chromosomal anomalies. Identification of the possible cause of fetal loss significantly redices long term psychological distress in women with miscarriage and enables improved genetic counselling for those couple in future pregnancies.
